Where drives carry the load in a bulk terminal
Terminal throughput is set by the conveying system. Drives start under load, run through vessel windows and sit in an exposed marine environment — conditions where drivetrain simplicity and availability matter more than nameplate rating alone.

Rail dumpers, truck tipplers and feeder conveyors move product into the terminal in bursts, with drives that start under load repeatedly through a shift.

Long overland and yard conveyor runs carry the terminal's continuous duty, often across exposed marine environments with corrosive salt loading.

Stackers and reclaimers combine travel, slew and boom conveying drives, where drivetrain weight and envelope directly affect machine design.

Shiploader and transfer tower conveyors run at high availability during a vessel window, where an unplanned drivetrain fault carries demurrage cost.
Where permanent magnet direct drive is applied
A permanent magnet motor wound for the driven speed removes the reducer, coupling and lubrication system from the drivetrain. In a terminal that matters most on continuous conveying duty, in confined drive locations and where corrosion drives maintenance cost. It is an application decision, not a blanket replacement for every geared drive on site.

Values below are representative datasheet ranges for the permanent magnet drive equipment classes used in port and bulk terminal applications, together with a reference configuration supplied into terminal conveying duty. Final selection is confirmed against machine duty during engineering assessment.

What a terminal drive evaluation requires
An assessment starts from the machine and its duty, not from a catalogue. The following information is what we ask for before stating whether a direct drive conversion is technically and commercially appropriate.
- Machine and duty
- Conveyor, elevator, stacker or shiploader, with throughput, run hours and vessel or train cycle pattern.
- Belt data
- Belt width, speed, drum diameter, wrap arrangement and take-up type.
- Torque and power
- Rated and breakaway torque, absorbed power where measured, and starting requirements under load.
- Existing drivetrain
- Motor nameplate, gearbox ratio and service factor, coupling type, fault and maintenance history.
- Electrical supply
- Available voltage (380 V, 660 V, 1 140 V, 6 kV or 10 kV), capacity, starting method and existing drive equipment.
- Environment
- Salt and moisture exposure, dust loading, ambient temperature range and any hazardous-area classification.
- Access and outage
- Crane and access provision at the drive head, and the shutdown window available for a conversion.
