BC Hydro Custom Project Incentives for Industrial Energy Projects

Custom project incentives support qualifying energy efficiency, efficient electrification, load displacement and demand-management projects at larger commercial and industrial facilities. MOTIRATECH develops the engineering basis these projects require.

Program eligibility, incentive amounts and final approval are determined by BC Hydro. The information on this page is provided for general guidance and does not constitute a BC Hydro approval or incentive commitment.
Qualifying work

Project types the custom pathway is built for

Custom incentives are assessed project by project against measured energy outcomes. A battery energy storage project does not automatically qualify: eligibility depends on the specific project, how savings are measured, and the current BC Hydro program rules.

Energy efficiency

Equipment upgrades, plant expansions and process improvements that reduce measured electricity consumption.

Industrial energy management

Systematic identification, measurement and verification of energy opportunities across a production site.

Efficient electrification

Replacing fossil-fuel equipment with efficient electric technology where the change is technically sound.

Load displacement

Customer-owned renewable generation that offsets site load, often paired with storage.

Demand management

Shifting or reducing load during defined high-demand periods, including storage-supported strategies.

Engineering studies

Feasibility and measurement work that establishes whether a custom project is worth pursuing.

Project pathway

From screening study to verified outcome

Custom projects are evaluated on quantified, measurable energy performance. The engineering work that establishes that measurement is the same work that makes the project decision defensible internally.

  1. STEP 01

    Screen

Identify candidate measures from utility data, process data and site walkdowns.

  2. STEP 02

    Study

Quantify savings, define the measurement basis and test technical feasibility.

  3. STEP 03

    Define

Develop the engineering scope, equipment basis and cost estimate for the project.

  4. STEP 04

    Apply

Assemble the technical information the utility requires; the utility reviews and decides.

  5. STEP 05

    Implement

Procure, install, integrate and commission against the approved scope.

  6. STEP 06

    Verify

Support measurement and verification of the outcome after the project is in service.

What is assessed

  • 01Whether the measure produces a quantifiable, verifiable electricity outcome
  • 02How baseline and post-project performance will be measured
  • 03Whether the technology and application fit a recognized project category
  • 04Project cost, scope boundaries and implementation schedule
  • 05Interaction with other utility programs or offers
  • 06Site-specific technical constraints, including interconnection where generation or storage is involved
Current program requirementsProgram dates, incentive levels and eligibility requirements can change. Always verify current requirements with BC Hydro before making investment decisions.
